Objective(s): To create a video featuring local people expressing their views about how education and learning are an important part of family and community life. Through the making of the video, family literacy will be celebrated and promoted as a way of advancing literacy, in general.
Project Description: The main goal of this Master’s level project is to create a local video featuring local people. The open-ended interview format is designed to allow community members to have the chance to tell their stories and express their views about how education and learning are an important part of their families. The methods to be employed in the project will consist of personal reflective journaling, interviews, focus group sessions, and obtaining feedback from an advisory body. Approximately twenty individuals from Inuvik will be recruited and asked to share their thoughts, experiences and beliefs about the importance of education at the family and community levels. These open-ended interviews will be video-recorded. The Fogo Island model of community development through video will be used as a guide throughout this project. The results of the research will be delivered to the community through workshops held at the Aurora College Learning Centre, and by making a copy of the community video available to schools and learning centres throughout the Beaufort Delta region. A copy of the thesis and video will also be deposited at the Aurora Research Institute library. The study will be conducted from 12 April to 31 December, 2007 within the municipal bounds of Inuvik.
