Description du projet: The main goal of this Master's level research project is to create a video featuring local people expressing their views about how education and learning are an important part of family and community life. Through the making of the video, family literacy will be celebrated and promoted as a way of advancing literacy, in general. The project has three main components: the creation of a video about family literacy, obtaining community feedback about the video, and documenting the steps of the video-making process. The methods to be employed in the project will consist of personal reflective journaling, interviews, focus group sessions, and obtaining feedback from an advisory body. Approximately twenty individuals from Inuvik will be recruited and asked to share their thoughts, experiences and beliefs about the importance of education at the family and community levels. These open-ended interviews will be video-recorded. Following the filming of interviews, participants will be given the opportunity to view and approve sections of their interviews for use in the final copy of the video. Focus group sessions will then be held with project participants to gain an understanding of the effectiveness of the video as a medium for promoting family literacy. The next step in the project will be to approach local agency groups to view the video. Focus group sessions will be carried out with representatives of these groups to obtain further feedback on the effectiveness of the video as a literacy promotion tool. Interviews and focus group sessions will be conducted from 19 September to 31 December, 2006 within the municipal bounds of Inuvik.
