2006
20052004 Summary:
In order to develop realistic models, spring break-up and, if possible, freeze-up will be observed by researchers to assist in understanding historical data. The primary objective for 2006 is to document the daily progression ice break-up from small aircraft and from the ground. Much relevant data has already collected by the Flood Watch Committee. Water and ice levels will be measured before and ...

1993 Summary:
The researchers will continue their monitoring of ice formation and breakup at the Mackenzie River crossing near Fort Providence. Data will be collected on water levels, river velocity, ice thickness and strength, and snow depth. This information will contribute to our knowledge of ice formation and breakup at this crossing, with a goal of predicting freezeup and breakup events....

1992199119901988 Summary:
Ice gauges are installed on river ice once the ice is strong enough to support researchers (20 gauges in the Mackenzie Delta and 15 gauges on Hay River). The gauges are read every 10 days to obtain total ice thickness, white ice thickness and snow depth. From these data, the rates of ice growth and decay can be calculated, and the approximate date of maximum ice thickness can also be determined....

Summary:
Spring breakup in Northern Rivers are often associated with record water levels and often lead to flooding. Present methods of forecasting the severity of these events are hampered by lack of understanding. The acquired knowledge and understanding obtained from these studies will be applied to the enhancement of suitable models for predicting the time and magnitude of these events....

Summary:
To acquire aerial photography of hydrologic characteristics of ice break-up and movement in the Mackenzie and lower Liard Rivers. To acquire photography of river break-up and environmentally sensitive areas along the proposed Arctic Islands pipeline route from Churchill to Spence Bay. To acquire photography of specific glaciology research sites throughout the Arctic Islands (with emphasis on the...

Summary:
(1) To gather field data in order to assess drainage and erosion control and to evaluate the stability of slopes along the proposed Foothills Pipeline and at key river crossings; (2) To gather subsurface soil and ice information to analyze typical slope conditions for pipe support designs for Foothills Pipeline Limited....
