Objective(s): The river crossing at Fort Providence has a ferry service for the summer and early winter, and an ice bridge for the remainder of the winter. Breakup represents a critical time at this crossing and there is typically a period of several weeks between the decommissioning of the ice bridge and normal resumption of ferry operations. The objective of this study is to develop a better understanding of the breakup processes on this section of the Mackenzie River, with the ultimate objective of developing a forecasting tool.
Project Description: The researchers will study ice build-up and break-down at the Mackenzie River crossing near Fort Providence. Aerial surveys will be conducted to record ice build-up on video-tape. Data on water levels, river velocity, ice thickness and strength, and snow depth will be collected throughout the study. This information will contribute to our knowledge of ice formation and breakup at this crossing, with a goal of predicting freezeup and breakup events.
