Project Description: In order to develop realistic models, spring break-up and, if possible, freeze-up will be observed by researchers to assist in understanding historical data. The primary objective for 2006 is to document the daily progression ice break-up from small aircraft and from the ground. Much relevant data has already collected by the Flood Watch Committee. Water and ice levels will be measured before and after ice movements with standard survey instruments (typically using a surveyor's rod and level, or with computerized survey instruments 'total station' and GPS). A 2006 river bed survey will refine the data gathered in 2005, particularly in the vicinity of the delta. Additional detail describing the river's outlet geometry at the East and West Channels entering Great Slave Lake will be gathered, involving conventional surveying on the banks, and the use of a depth sounder and an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) in the water. The West Channel would be surveyed using conventional survey methods (total station and survey rod) and wading. Members of the local community have been invited to accompany researchers on observational flights. They will have the opportunity to assist with the field program, and have the opportunity to provide input to the study. The study will be conducted along the Hay River from approximately Enterprise (60° 33' N 116°08' W) to the Town of Hay River (60° 49' N 115°47' W) during the following periods: April 18-May 8, June 1-August 31, and October 16-December 15, 2006.
