Objective(s): The Town of Hay River, the people of the West Point First Nation, and the people of the Katl'odeeche First Nation often experience flooding during the river ice breakup in spring, as a result of the formation of ice jams on the Hay River. Consequently, the Town Flood Watch Committee monitors the river during this period, by conducting ice thickness measurements, aerial reconnaissance flights tracking the progression of breakup, and water level measurements during breakup. Their data, in conjunction with meteorological and streamflow data routinely collected by Environment Canada, provides the essential information needed to develop an ice jam flood forecasting model for this site. Such a forecasting model was developed for the town in the early 1990. However, scientific knowledge as advanced considerably since that time and so the objective of the study is to develop new updated ice jam flood forecasting models for the Town of Hay River. Such flood forecasting tools are very valuable from an emergency preparedness perspective.
