Objective(s): To develop a methodology for predicting changes in porosity and ice strength whch lead to river ice break-up based on standard meteorological information; to establish physical processes controlling runoff from permafrost wetlands and develop suitable hydrologic models for this environment; to develop a physically-based model that characterized the variability and decrease in strength of river ice with respect to structural and optical properties during the thermal/radiation decay period preceding breakup;
Project Description: Spring breakup in Northern Rivers are often associated with record water levels and often lead to flooding. Present methods of forecasting the severity of these events are hampered by lack of understanding. The acquired knowledge and understanding obtained from these studies will be applied to the enhancement of suitable models for predicting the time and magnitude of these events.
