Objectif(s): The purpose of the 2007 AEMP is to initiate a long term aquatics sampling program in order to produce a data set that will be used in trend analyses to track the overall effects of the project on the aquatic ecosystem of Lac de Gras and to confirm predictions made during the EA. This is achieved by conducting consistent annual sampling at fixed mid-field and far-field stations for which baseline conditions have already been established.
Description du projet: The purpose of the 2007 AEMP is to initiate a long term aquatics sampling program in order to produce a data set that will be used in trend analyses to track the overall effects of the project on the aquatic ecosystem of Lac de Gras and to confirm predictions made during the EA. This is achieved by conducting consistent annual sampling at fixed mid-field and far-field stations for which baseline conditions have already been established. Fixed stations will be visited by boat and by snow machine over the year. At each station water samples will be collected at three depths for full chemical analyses including major ions, trace metals, and nutrients using the lowest commercially available analytical detection limits. Only during the summer sampling sessions, each of the stations will also be sampled for zooplankton, phytoplankton biomass, plus taxonomy, benthic analyses and sediment chemistry. In addition, Slimy Scuplin's will be collected and sent for metal analysis, plus non-lethal sampling will be conducted to collect age, length, weight, sex, and other physical features and returned back to the lake. The following will be part of the methodology: *Boats, snowmachines, and helicopters *Sampling devices: Beta Bottle, Ekman, Sediment Corer, Zooplankton/Phytoplankton Net, Electro Shocking Back Packs *Sample Sizes: Water: Full water chemsitry: 120 samples (winter/summer), summer nutrient samples 360; Sediment: 40 samples; Benthic: 40 samples; Zooplankton:111 samples; Phytoplankton: 111 samples; Slimy Sculpins: 400 live / 240 dead. DDMI has to supply the information to the following boards and government organizations: WLWB, DFO, EC, INAC, and EMAB. Summary information is provided in DDMI Annual Environmental Agreement report, which is produced every year. The executive summary of this report is translated into several languages. DDMI will also be updating the communities during DDMI community visits over the year. Fieldwork will be conducted from September 21 to November 15, 2007 at the Diavik Diamond Mine - Lac de Gras, NT.
