Objective(s): To revisit fixed sample stations in an effort to determine any seasonal variation that may exist and confirm impact predictions. The study will encompass the following water based parameters: water quality, zooplankton & phytoplankton biomass and taxonomy, benthic invertebrate analysis and sediment chemistry. This program also includes dust monitoring and small & large body fish health.
Project Description: To revisit fixed sample stations at near-field, mid-field and far-field sites over the course of the year in an effort to determine any seasonal variation that may exist and confirm impact predictions. The study will encompass the following water based parameters: water quality, zooplankton & phytoplankton biomass and taxonomy, benthic invertebrate analysis and sediment chemistry. This program also includes dust monitoring and small & large body fish health. Equipment: Beta bottle, ekman sampler, sedimer corer, plankton net, secchi disk, depth- integrated sampler, snow corer, and dust gauges. For the following samples all values include provisions for QA/QC. Samples will be taken as follows: Phosphorous & Nitrogen (134 sample), sediment (84 samples), Benthic Invertebrates (40 Composite), Zooplankton (152 samples), Phytoplankton (32 samples), Chlorophyll a (76 samples), Dust particulate (120), Dust snow cover/water chemistry (28), Dust snow cover particulate (28). Two individuals will be selected from the local communities to participate in the above-noted program, in addition to the other regulated programs. These positions are Seasonal term positions that run April until September. Diavik Diamond Mine Inc. (DDMI) supplies this information to the following boards and government organizations: Wildlife Land and Water Board, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and the Environmental Monitoring Advisory Board. Summary information is provided in DDMI's Annual Environmental Agreement report, which is produced every year. The executive summary of this report is translated into several languages. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from April 1, 2014 to September 15, 2014.
