Objectif(s): The purpose of the 2001 Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) is to initiate a long term aquatics sampling program in order to produce a data set that will be used in trend analysis to track the overall effects of the project on the aquatic ecosystem of Lac de Gras and to confirm predictions made during the environmental assessment (EA). This is achieved by conducting consistent annual sampling at fixed mid-field and far-field stations for which baseline conditions have already been established.

Description du projet: The research team will visit 11 fixed monitoring stations by boat. At each station, water samples will be collected at mid-depth for full chemical analyses (major ions, trace metals and nutrients) using the lowest commercially available analytical detection limits. At each station, samples will also be collected for zooplankton and phytoplankton biomass. Samples for taxonomy will be archived. At three separate stations, samples will be collected for benthic analysis and sediment chemistry. Additionally, in late spring of each year, snow cores will be collected at the fixed monitoring stations in Lac de Gras, to assess the quantity and chemical characteristics of dust that is a source input to Lac de Gras.
