Objective(s): The purpose of the 2009 AEMP is to continue a long term aquatics sampling program in order to produce a data set that will be used in trend analysis to track the overall effects of the Diavik Diamond Mine on the aquatic ecosystem of Lac de Gras. It is also to confirm predictions made in the Environmental Assessment.
Project Description: The purpose of the 2009 AEMP is to continue a long term aquatics sampling program in order to produce a data set that will be used in trend analysis to track the overall effects of the Diavik Diamond Mine on the aquatic ecosystem of Lac de Gras. It is also to confirm predictions made in the Environmental Assessment. This is achieved by conducting consistent annual sampling at fixed mid-field and far-field stations for which baseline conditions have already been established. This study will re-visit fixed sample stations over the course of a year in an effort to determine any seasonal variation that may exist. The study will encompass the following water-based parameters: water quality, zooplankton & phytoplankton biomass and taxonomy, benthic invertebrate analysis and sediment chemistry. This program also includes dust monitoring. Transportation: Boats, snow machines and helicopters will be used. Equipment: Beta bottle, ekman, sediment corer, plankton net, secchi disk, depth-integrated sampler. Four individuals will be selected from the local communities to participate in the above-noted program, in addition to the researchers’ other regulated programs. These are seasonal positions that run from April to October. The researchers try to facilitate training and experience in support of the Environmental Monitor Certification Program offered by the GNWT Department of Education, Culture and Employment when selecting these candidates. DDMI supplies the results of this study to the following boards and government organizations: WLWB, DFO, EC, INAC and EMAB. Summary information is provided in DDMI's Annual Environmental Agreement report, which is produced every year. The executive summary of this report is translated into several languages. DDMI also updates communities during community visits over the year. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from April 07 to October 31, 2009, on Lac de Gras, NT (110"30' W and 64"30'N).
