Objective(s): The objective of this research is to continue with phytoremediation planting tests on the Nota Creek C-17 wellsite.

Project Description: This licence is being issued for the scientific research application No. 973. The objective of this research is to continue with phytoremediation planting tests on the Nota Creek C-17 wellsite. Additional plantings are necessary to determine the efficiency of the phytoremediation program and whether or not it is a viable remediation strategy for the site. The full wellsite will be planted in 2009. Pilot plot planting was initiated on site in 2008. The 2009 planting is a continuation of that trial planting but it will now be expanded to the whole site. A mower may be mobilized to the wellsite in March under frozen ground conditions to be used later in the fall. Access to the site for the balance of the year will be by helicopter. Planting is planned for early June, site monitoring amd evaluation will be undertaken during the growing season in July/August and site harvesting is projected to occur in late September. The 2008 pilot plot planting results will be communicated to Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), the Sahtu Land and Water Board (SLWB) and the Aurora Research Institute once the laboratory analysis is completed. The 2008 Summary Progress Report has already been submitted to the Aurora Research Institute. Significant developments will be communicated to the community organizations identified for consultation. Both INAC and the SLWB will be kept appraised of the 2009 field work as it progresses. Here again, significant developments will be communicated to the community organizations identified for consultation. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted at the Nota Creek C-17 Wellsite from March 17 to October 15, 2009.
