Objectif(s): To study the relationship of temperature and salient properties to the thickness, drift and growth of sea ice during the proceeding freezing season; and to recover and re-deploy sonar instruments utilized in this research. The observations contribute to a better description of the ice and ocean environment, can be applied to the safer design of ships and structures for offshore operations, and to a better understanding of the process of climate change in the arctic.

Description du projet: The researchers will retrieve untended sonar instruments operating beneath the sea that were positioned in April 1994. After servicing, these instruments will be re-deployed at the same locations to continue the observations for another year. A survey of water water properties will be collected at about 20 sites in the offshore and observations made using a lowered probe to 1500 m depth or to the seafloor, whichever is shallower.
