Objective(s): To recover from the seafloor of the Beaufort Sea sonar instruments which have been measuring the motion, thickness and ridging of sea ice as it drifted overhead throughout the past year and these instruments will be re-deployed for another year; to repeat a survey of the temperature and salinity properties of seawater in the Beaufort Sea in late winter; to study their relationship to the thickness, drift and growth of sea during the preceding freezing season; and to develop a better description of the ice and ocean environments in this hostile marine area.
Project Description: The ice measurements are made by untended instruments operating beneath the sea throughout the year. The instruments to be retrieved in March 1994 were positioned in April 1993 and will be recovered by aircraft. The sonars will be re-deployed at the same locations to continue observations for another year. The survey of water properties by a lowered probe to 1500 m depth of the seafloor will be conducted at about 35 sites.
