Objective(s): To recover and redeploy sonar instruments on the seafloor of the Beaufort Sea in order to measure the motion, thickness and ridging characteristics of sea ice as it drifts overhead throughout the year; to repeat a survey of seawater temperature and salinity properties in the Beaufort Sea in late winter (for the tenth year), and to study the relationship between these properties and ice thickness, drift and growth during the preceeding six month interval.

Project Description: As part of an on-going study, sonar instruments will be recovered through the ice at three locations on the continental shelf that is located north and east of Tuktoyaktuk. The sonars provide information about the motion, thickness and ridging of sea ice. A survey of seawater properties, including temperature and salinity, will also be conducted at selected sites.
