Summary:
The NETCARE observations will be covered the range from Longyearbyen, Svalbard (European Arctic) until Inuvik (NWT – Polar 6 aircraft only) and Barrow (Alaska – Polar 5 aircraft only). The observational platforms will be two aircraft: 1) the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) POLAR 5, a modified DC-3 aircraft; and 2) the AWI POLAR 6, also a modified DC-3 aircraft.
The two platforms will be coordin...

Summary:
The objectives of this research project are:
(1.) To perform in-situ measurements of number concentrations, optical properties, and chemical composition of atmospheric aerosol particles with sizes between 3 nanometers and 10 micrometers.
(2.) Identify aerosols of natural and anthropogenic origin.
(3.) Quantify their relative contributions in dependency of particle size.
(4.) Evaluate the pot...

Summary:
The objective of this research is to reconstruct climate change information as well as recent industrial mercury and lead pollution histories for Inuvik and the lower Mackenzie River valley.
To determine the above, a core sample of peat will be taken from a peat bog located near Inuvik, and analyzed for elements and dusts deposited from the air over the last 7,000 years.
The site will be a...

Summary:
This study is designed to fill gaps in Environment Canada’s understanding of the aquatic environment potentially impacted by various aspects of the Mackenzie Gas Project (MGP). Potential stressors including: increased erosion, nutrient releases from sewage discharges, other chemical releases, water withdrawals, impacts of barge traffic, increased atmospheric emissions, etc. The focus will be on th...

1993 Summary:
There is only limited information on contaminant trends in arctic ecosystems. This long-term study is examining the amounts of contaminants present in arctic ice caps. By taking core samples from ice caps, the researchers are able to measure the levels of contaminants that have been deposited by precipitation over many years. This study will also improve our understanding of the levels of conta...

1992 Summary:
In this ongoing research, we plan to sample lake water and lake sediments from a number of study sites located near Resolute. At each lake we will analyze the water and mud samples for the presence of pollution (i.e., black carbon particles) as well as species of algae. This data will provide information about the past environment and indicate environmental change....
