Objectif(s): SENES will be carrying out the sampling for the Contaminants and Remediation Directorate (CARD) of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) at the abandoned Great Bear Lake mine sites in the Sahtu region. Sampling will be taken to determine remediation objectives for metal concentrations in soil. The ultimate objective is to assist INAC with its ongoing work to clean up the abandoned mine sites.

Description du projet: This licence is being issued for the scientific research application # 845. SENES will be carrying out the sampling for the Contaminants and Remediation Directorate (CARD) of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) at the abandoned Great Bear Lake mine sites in the Sahtu region. Sampling will be taken to determine remediation objectives for metal concentrations in soil. The ultimate objective is to assist INAC with its ongoing work to clean up the abandoned mine sites. Transportation to the sampling sites from the base camp will happen daily by small plane (most likely a beaver). Once on site, water sampling in lakes will happen by an inflatable boat with a small motor. All other sampling on land will be done by foot. Upon completion of the field work and receipt of all the results, reports will be prepared for INAC CARD. INAC CARD will be responsible for ultimately communicating the results to communities. Community members from Deline have been contacted and will be hired to assist with this research. Fieldwork will be conducted from June 26 to July 26, 2008, at three abandoned mine sites near the southeast shore of Great Bear Lake: 1) Silver Bear Mine; 2) El Bonanza; 3) Contact Lake. The base camp for the field sampling will be at the INAC CARD site at Terra Mines.
