Project Description: The project objectives include the collection of information and samples to characterize the environmental conditions at the sites. The types of samples to be collected at each of the three sites include: water (approximately 12 samples), sediment (approximately 6 samples). The work involves manual sampling and measurement with minimal disturbance of field conditions. No heavy equipment or drills will be used. Transportation to the site will be via fixed-wing aircraft. In the case of Contact Lake and El Bonanza, on-site transportation will be on foot or by small boat. Transportation on the Port Radium site may include pick-up trucks or ATVs traveling on established mine roads. Specific descriptions of the various types of sampling are provided below: Water and sediment sampling – all lake samples will be collected from a small inflatable boat. The samples will be analyzed to determine if the water or sediments have been contaminated by the mines. The number and volume of samples is very small (will fit in 3 coolers). The Port Radium Remediation Project has established a permanent camp in the vicinity of the Port Radium airstrip on Glacier Lake. INAC is the proponent of the Remediation Project and Aboriginal Engineering Limited is the prime contractor. INAC has been issued a Land Use Permit for the Remediation Project (and camp) by the Sahtu Land and Water Board. The field team for the monitoring activities described in this application will be based out of the Port Radium camp (i.e., a separate camp will not be established for the monitoring project). Transportation from the Port Radium camp to Contact Lake and El Bonanza will be by light aircraft. Field and final reports describing the 2007 monitoring programs and results will be provided to INAC. INAC will communicate this information to individuals and communities through their ongoing communication/consultation program. Fieldwork will be conducted from July 25 to August 31, 2007 at Port Radium Mine (abandoned), Contact Lake Mine (abandoned) and El Bonanza Mine (abandoned).
