Objective(s): To examine the growth and decay of ground ice in near-surface sediments of the Mackenzie delta area; to examine the development of ice wedges; to monitor the temperature in permafrost; to establish the relation between air temperature and ground temperature at two sites near Illisarvik; to determine the climatic gradient between coastal and inland locations in the region; to monitor the response of permafrost temperatures to changes in climate.
Project Description: The purpose is to collect samples of ground ice and to measure air, ground and lake temperatures. We use the information to help understand how the permafrost in the area has changed in the last few thousand years, in order to determine what might happen in the future.
