Objective(s): To determine the magnitude and nature of frost heave; to continue investigations on the hydrology of frost heave; to document the near-surface ice content of permafrost at various sites; to determine the cryostratigraphic characteristics of the early Holocene thaw unconformity in the Delta lakes; to determine conditions causing the formation of shoals in Delta lakes; to investigate the flow of water between channels and lakes of the Delta in winter.
Project Description: This on-going research will continue to examine the nature of frost heaving, permafrost and water flow in the Mackenzie Delta and associated lakes. Some experimentation on frost heaving will be conducted at specific sites during the winter months. In the summer, the distribution of ice in the upper layers of the permafrost on land as well as the nature of permafrost beneath shallow lakes will be examined.
