Objective(s): To determine the magnitude and nature of frost heave in lake-bottom sediments during freezing; to document the near surface ice content of permafrost at various sites in the Mackenzie Delta; to determine the cryostratigraphic characteristics of the early Holocene thaw unconformity in the Mackenzie Delta area; to determine conditions causing shoals in Mackenzie Delta lakes.
Project Description: The Research will continue to examine the hydrology of frost heave in the ideal environment of a lake-bottom. In addition some experimental trials of frost heave in equipment of various sizes will be conducted in winter time. Summer activities are planned in the outer Delta to examine the distribution of ice in the upper layers of permafrost and to investigate permafrost conditions beneath shallow lakes.
