This project continues to examine the history of plant communities in the Mackenzie River and Delta regions over the past 15,000 years. Using a hand auger, core samples of sediments are taken from lake bottoms and the sediments are analyzed for the presence of pollen and diatoms. This study will investigate the long-term stability of the arctic "oases" of Polar Bear Pass and Hot Weather Creek by the pollen analyses of lake sediment cores. The sediment that accumulates in the bottom of lakes provides a history of the conditions in the lake.
