Project Description: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No.5344. The purpose of this qualitative research is to explore the factors that influenced five high school students in a northern community to discontinue participation in upper-level high school music courses. The Principal Investigator (PI) will use a qualitative approach to the research project. The data will be collected and recorded from participants to explore factors that influenced high school students who discontinued participation in upper-level high school music courses. The PI will use purposeful convenience sampling and criterion-based sampling. The data collection method to be used will be recorded, one-on-one, semi-structured, qualitative interviews with five participants lasting 30-40 minutes. Constant comparative data analysis will be used to interpret the data. The PI will notify the principal of the school about conducting the research project. The PI will contact non- music students in grade 11 and/or 12 once the course begins to see who is interested in being involved in my research project. The PI will share the details about the research project, the information letter, and a consent form for both the participant and the parent/ guardian. The PI will then follow up by contacting the student's parents/ guardians stating their child has expressed an interest in participating in my research. The PI will gain parent/guardian and participant consent prior to conducting a one time, 30-40 minute, one-on-one interview, at a time, outside of school hours, and place that is convenient for the student. Once the interviews are transcribed the participant will be given the transcript of the recorded interview for member checking. The finding will be shared, in the form of a paper, with the Government of the Northwest Territories, the superintendent and principal of the school, the students who were involved in the research project and their parents, as well as anyone who is interested in reading my findings. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from January 5, 2023 to June 30, 2023.
