Objective(s): The objective of the socio-economic study is to collect baseline data to enhance Fortune's understanding of conditions in communities potentially affected by the NICO project.
Project Description: The objective of the socio-economic study is to collect baseline data to enhance Fortune's understanding of conditions in communities potentially affected by the NICO project. The information will be used to prepare documents required by regulators to make decisions about the project. The socio-economic study may include, in addition to reviews of secondary data sources, key informant interviews and focus group discussions with residents of Behchoko, Gameti, Whati, Wekweeti and Yellowknife. Key informant interviews and focus group discussions complement official data from secondary sources, providing qualitative information on socio-economic trends and conditions, as well as on community/sub-population strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and constraints. The benefits of the socio-econmic study include the following: - contributing to making the Environmental Impact Assessment submitted by Fortune Minerals more comprehensive in its consideration of potential socio-economic impacts. - assisting people (including Fortune Minerals, government, regulators and community residents) to better understand and manage the socio-economic impacts (both positive and negative) of the Project. The benefit therefore is primarily at a community level, although individuals also stand to benefit as members of the community. It is also frequently the case in focus group discussions that people appreciate the opportunity to engage, tell their stories and speak with others about issues of concern. This however depends on the participants. Fortune Minerals has provided to communities the results of previous research in the form of copies of reports and non-technical summaries. This practice would continue for the 2010 socio-economic study. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from March, 2010 to December 31, 2010.
