Project Description: This license has been issued for the scientific research application #934. The objective of the socio-economic study is to collect baseline data to enhance Fortune’s understanding of conditions in communities potentially affected by the NICO project. The information will be used to prepare documents required by regulators to make decisions about the project. The socio-economic study may include, in addition to reviews of secondary data sources, key informant interviews and focus group discussions with residents of Behchoko, Gamètì, Whatì, Wekweètì and Yellowknife. Key informant interviews and focus groups discussions complement official data from secondary sources, providing qualitative information on socio-economic dynamics and trends, as well as on community/sub population strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and constraints. Site visits by field staff and assistants are currently planned for the spring and summer of 2009. Fortune has provided to communities the results of previous research in the form of copies of reports and non technical summaries. This practice would continue for the 2009 socio-economic study. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from January 01 to December 31, 2009 Behchoko, Gamètì, Whatì, and Wekweètì, and Yellowknife.
