Project Description: The objective of the socio-economic study is to collect baseline data to enhance Fortune’s understanding of conditions in communities potentially affected by the NICO project. The information will be used to develop measures to mitigate any negative impacts and enhance benefits of the project, and to prepare documents required by regulators to make decisions about the project. The socio-economic study may include, key informant interviews and focus group discussions with residents of Behchoko, Gamètì, Whatì, Wekweètì and Yellowknife. Key informant interviews and focus groups discussions complement official data from secondary sources, providing qualitative information on socio-economic dynamics and trends, as well as on community/sub population strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and constraints. Every effort will be made to ensure that all populations subgroups are represented. Participation in the study, terms of participation and the content of interviews and discussions will be agreed with community leadership before work is started. This research will be communicated to the communities in reports and non technical summaries. This fieldwork will be conducted from August 05 to December 31, 2008 in Behchoko, Gamètì, Whatì, Wekweètì and Yellowknife.
