Objective(s): To understand water and energy fluxes in northern regions, and to develop improved models of these processes. Project studies will look at both the atmospheric and surface water budgets of the Mackenzie Basin, with an emphasis on the effects of climate change on hydrology.

Project Description: The objective of this project is to understand water and energy fluxes in northern regions, and to develop improved models of these processes. Project studies will look at both the atmospheric and surface water budgets of the Mackenzie Basin, with an emphasis on the effects of climate change on hydrology. The rates and processes controlling accumulation of snow, snowmelt, water flux through snow, the effect of snow/soil temperature and vegetation types on runoff processes, evaporation processes, and the exchange of water between snowcover, active layer and permafrost will be examined. Models of snowmelt runoff will be developed to improve techniques for predicting environmental impacts. Similar to previous work, site work will consist of 1 to 2 week field trips in April, June and September. Instrumentation at each sampling site records weather, soil temperature, soil moisture, water depth, and the energy balance of the land surface. Activities at each site will simply include the downloading of data from the data-loggers, instrument maintenance, and the measurement of pre-melt snow surveys on the ground in April, as well as streamflow measurement at Zed Creek and Hans Creek. The Trail Valley Creek and Richards Island site will be accessed by helicopter and snowmobile, while the Havikpak Creek site will be accessed by foot and snowmobile. Given the ongoing nature of the project, the results of the study are pending. However, a summary report of yearly research activities and preliminary findings will be available through the Aurora Research Institute. Fieldwork will be conducted from April 15-30, June 21 to July 7, and September 1-15, 2007 at Trail Valley Creek (68.7N, 133.5W, 45 km from Inuvik), Havikpak Creek (68.3341N, 133.6045W), a variety of locations on northern Richards Island (Denis Lagoon, 69.3583N, 134.6503W), as well as at Zed Creek (68.9517N, 133.4342W) and Hans Creek (68.8675N, 133.5922W).
