Objective(s): The aim of this PhD research project is to examine resource decision-making processes associated with proposals for the Mackenzie Gas Project. In particular, the research will explore the ways in which people in the Sahtu are engaged in consultation and environmental assessment processes.

Project Description: The aim of this PhD research project is to examine resource decision-making processes associated with proposals for the Mackenzie Gas Project. A main objective of this research is to explore the effectiveness of consultation and environmental assessment processes in addressing the values and needs of Sahtu communities; thus, the focus of this study is on local community conceptions of environmental impacts, consultation and environmental assessment processes, and outside influences such as environmental assessment institutions and practices, and consultation strategies employed by federal agencies and industry. The research methods employed in this project include participant observation and interviews with community members. If possible, focus groups will be organized in order for people to brainstorm and communicate ideas in a group setting. The researcher plans to work closely with a research consultant from Tulita to ensure that the research is reflective of community needs and values. Formal interviews and focus groups will be recorded and transcribed (with participants’ consent). Data collected as a result of participant observation activities will be logged in a field journal. All research participants will be informed about the objectives and design of the research at the commencement of research activities, and consent for participation in the research will be obtained from acknowledged community officials and community members at that time. Copies of any reports or publications written as a result of the research will be provided to the administrative bodies in the community and research participants. Copies of interview transcripts will be provided to research participants upon request. Results of the research will also be provided to communities for use in any future projects requiring consultation or environmental assessment. The study will take place from February 5 to March 8, 2007 within the municipal bounds of Tulita.
