Objective(s): To examine resource decision-making processes associated with proposals for the Mackenzie Gas Project and to explore the ways in which people in the Sahtu are engaged in consultation, environmental assessment, and public participation processes.
Project Description: The goals of this research are to examine resource decision-making processes associated with proposals for the Mackenzie Gas Project. In particular, ways in which people in the Sahtu are engaged in consultation, environmental assessment, and public participation processes will be explored. The major objective of this research is to provide preliminary results of past research to communities and engage with community members about the preliminary results. Research methods will include participant observation and community open houses. Community open houses will consist of a short informal presentation about the research, and opportunities for questions and comments from community members. If requested, interviews will be recorded and transcribed (with participant's consent) and data collected as a result of community participation and comments in the open houses and as a result of participant observation activities will be logged in a field journal and may be photographed. The researcher will disseminate research results from previous research trips to Sahtu communities and will be meeting with research participants to provide them with copies of preliminary research results, and engage with them in discussions about the research findings and interpretations. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted between July 15, 2010 and December 31, 2010.
