Project Description: The proposed fieldwork is intended to characterize baseline and post-baseline conditions in the lakes and streams near areas of current and pending mining activity. In anticipation of future infrastructure development, baseline data will be collected in those areas. Fish populations of the Panda Diversion Channel (PDC) will continue to be monitored, and compared with the productivity of two nearby natural streams. Water quality data will be collected to meet the minimum two year requirement for baseline data for Ursula Lake, Lac de Gras near Paul Lake Bridge and Upper Exeter Lake. Aquatic biota will be collected in Upper Exeter and Ursula lakes. The monitored parameters of all projects are similar and include some or all of the following: hydrology, meteorology, water quality, limnology, sediment quality, phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, fish habitat, and fish communities (physical characteristics and sampling of tissue for metals analysis). On site research personnel and equipment will be transported to and from lake sites by helicopter. A small boat equipped with an outboard motor will be used to collect the samples from the lakes. Sampling and monitoring will take place from end of May to mid-October. Water quality, phytoplankton and zooplankton samples will be collected using a clean GO-FLO PVC water sampler. Physical limnology measurements will measure dissolved oxygen and temperature. Benthos and sediment quality will be measured using an Ekman grab sampler. Various methods will be used to sample fish. Gillnets will be set for short (1hr.) periods. Where possible, tissue samples will be collected from the fish that die in the gillnets. A maximum of 20 lake trout and 20 round white fish will be sampled for tissue analysis. Habitat assessment of littoral zones will also be conducted in two lakes using an underwater camera. Results will be made publicly available through BHP Billiton and will be presented in a Final Summary Report. At least 62% northern employees and 31% northern aboriginal employees will be used. Hazardous materials include small quantities of formalin and acid preservative for samples, and fuel for powering the outboard motors on small lakes. All hazardous material required for this field program will be handled carefully in leak-proof containers. The study will be conducted from May 29 to December 31, 2006 at the EKATI Diamond Mine.
