Project Description: As part of developing an understanding of northern aboriginal ways of learning, teaching and communicating, this study aims to examine the traditional (pre-contact), historical (post-contact) and contemporary forms of literacy in the Inuinnaqtun-speaking community of Holman. It is also hoped that this study will generate new knowledge on locally-based and culturally-appropriate research methods for use by northern organizations and communities involved in conducting research. Year 3 of this four-year study will focus on completing interviews with approximately fifteen community Elders on literacy themes and life histories. Verification of information already collected, including re-interviewing where necessary, will also be carried out. In addition, five families will be selected for investigation of contemporary literacy, which will entail participant observation and interviewing. Research findings will be presented to the community of Holman at an Elders’ gathering. The material will be presented in a multi-media, bilingual format. Individuals and the community as a whole will have the opportunity to provide feedback and input to the research team. A plain language report of the research (in both English and Inuinnaqtun) will also be made available in the community and through the NWT Literacy Council website. The study will be conducted from May 23 to December 31, 2006 within the municipal bounds of the Hamlet of Holman.
