Project Description: The objective of this study is to collect fish habitat data at stream crossings of the Prairie Creek Winter access road alignment. The information will support documentation requirements for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans relating to the Fisheries Act, as well as the potential need for a Fisheries Authorization for the re-establishment of the Winter Access Road to proceed in the 2005-2006 season. Data collection will be in the form of observation, collection of physical stream dimensions and recording of %substrate type and standard habitat form, electrofishing and stream flow metering. Gathered data will include a description of the physical characteristics of streams/drainages, considered to be fish habitat that are crossed or encroached by the winter access road alignment. Crossing locations not confirmed in previous studies as fish habitat (Rescan 1994) will be electrofished to determine the presence or absence of fish and then, if required, inventoried for habitat characteristics. Results will be communicated in the form of a study report, mailed and faxed to all interested parties and posted on the Canadian Zinc website. It is intended that local support, in the form of one or two field assistants, will be required and it is the intention of the project team and Canadian Zinc to contact Alpine Environmental in Ft Liard and Frank Kotchea at Beaver Enterprises to assist in the provision of local assistance.
