Project Description: Peel Plateau and Plain is an area with hydrocarbon potential spanning the NWT-Yukon border. A primary objective of this project is to expand geoscience knowledge to stimulate petroleum exploration, industry investment, and economic development for the benefit of Northerners. This is year one of a four year project. Three geologists will be flying by helicopter out of Inuvik on a daily basis to look at the exposed rocks on ridges and in river valleys. They will land and shut down for one to two hours at various stations while examining the rock outcrops. The researchers will also do a combination of day set-outs by helicopter from Inuvik. The team may be collecting some small (up to 6 inches wide) samples representative of certain rock formations using rock hammers (a chisel). They may also sample larger pieces (up to 12 inches wide) of rock for fossil contents. The researchers will use no heavy equipment, such as drills. As the 2005 work is of short duration and only reconnaissance work, the majority of participation and benefits opportunities would be in the 2006 summer season (a full field season). Community visits and educational field trips are planned for years 2 and 3 of this study. The team will also present their research at the NWT Geoscience Forum in Yellowknife and at the Inuvik Petroleum Show for all four years of the project. The study will be conducted at Peel Plateau and Plain, from August 2 to August 12, 2005.
