Description du projet: The Peel Plateau and Plain is a region of under-explored hydrocarbon potential. Bedrock mapping and exploration drilling was done in the 1960s. The objective of this project is to improve knowledge of regional geology, including stratigraphy; correlation, depositional and tectonic histories; basin evolution; and petroleum geology and potential. Reconnaissance work will be conducted in the Peel Plateau and Plain, studying exposed rocks and sampling certain rock formations. Work will commence with a roadside geology tour along the Dempster Highway in order to form an understanding of the general area prior to fieldwork. Teams will fly by helicopter for the last three weeks in July to observe exposed rock of the Mackenzie Mountain front, occasionally landing to examine rocky outcrops. In areas of good exposure, fly camps will be established for two to three days at a time. Small samples of certain rock formations will be collected using rock hammers. Rock may also be sampled for fossil content. The thickness of rock formations will also be measured. No heavy equipment will be used during the fieldwork. The findings of the study will be publicly available through the project website (www.nwtgeoscience.ca/petroleum/PeelPlateau.html). The study will be conducted from June 16-21, and July 3-31, 2006 at the following locations: Dempster Highway site (67 09’N 135 55’W), east of Snake River (65 29’ 45.5”N 133 00’ 17.6”W), east of Cranswick River (65 24.06’N 131 49.035’W), Orthogonal River (65 07.5’N 131 30’W), and Imperial Canyon and river (65 06’N 128 04’W).
