Project Description: The researchers are trying to determine whether contaminant levels are changing in lake trout and burbot in the Northwest Territories. The researchers will focus their analyses on contaminants such as PCBs, DDT, toxaphene and mercury but also will analyze a subset of fish for new compounds of concern. During the project, 20 lake trout will be collected from each of the four study locations and 20 burbot will be collected from the West Basin of Great Slave Lake. The fish will be collected by local community members during their normal fishing activities, except in the West Basin, where the trout will be collected by the Hay River commercial fishery. All fish will be captured using gill nets or by angling. Length, age, weight, lipid (fat) content, and sex will be determined for each fish, along with staple isotope measures of feeding. The study will be conducted at: the East Arm of Great Slave Lake, near Lutsel K’e; the West Basin of Great Slave Lake, near Fort Resolution; Colville Lake; and, Cli Lake, near Fort Simpson. The fish will be captured from August 1 to December 31, 2005.
