Objective(s): Knowledge about nurses' transition into practice is necessary for the development of effective recruitment and retention programs. A variety of programs have been put into effect in an attempt to assist new graduate nurses with their transition into practice, but little is known about which approach works best. In addition, current knowledge of new graduate nurse transition is based largely on research carried out in southern Canada and the United States which does not account for the unique nature of nurses' work in the NWT. Thus, the purpose of this study is to discover a substantive theory that explains how new graduate nurses begin to practice in the NWT.
