Objective(s): The objectives are to complete biological and hydraulic assessments of the constructed diversion channel at the mine site that has been enhanced to provide fish habitat compensation for stream habitat losses as a component of mining operations and under the requirements of the Habitat Compensation Agreement between the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and BHP Diamonds Inc.

Project Description: The project will look at the effectiveness of created fish habitat within the on-site Panda Diversion Channel. Assessments will include fish use, invertebrate use, stability and function on a seasonal and yearly basis. Fish will be collected and released live using two-way box traps, seineing and electro-fishing. Invertebrates and periphyton samples will be taken using atrificial substrate samplers. Data collection will also include flow monitoring. All assessments will be completed within the Diversion Channel and Grizzly and Buster Creeks within the mine site. BHP will provide support staff which will include people hired locally.
