Objective(s): The Sachs Harbour Elders & Youth Councils wish to pursue the continuation of the Oral & Traditional Knowledge / History of Banks Island with focus on northern areas of the Island. Canadian Heritage, Parks Canada support the project and will be responsible for providing transportation to sites. This project will be done as a Elders/Youth traditional knowledge camp. Elders selected will have knowledge of the area so that the knowledge is passed on to future generations. Sites where elders have lived and cultural features (old & recent) will be recorded and interpreted. Activities may include: language, plants, cooking, hunting, shelter building, and traditional place names.
Project Description: The Sachs Harbour Elders & Youth Councils wish to pursue the continuation of the Oral & Traditional Knowledge / History of Banks Island with focus on northern areas of the Island. Before going to Aulavik National Park, the elders participating will be visited and shown a map of the park and the surrounding area to see how many traditional place names they can recall and how many places they actually visited themselves. Skills the elders would like to pass onto the youth will be determined and an activity schedule organized. Twin Otter charters will be used to transport people to the camp location (Green Cabin) and to Mould Bay on Prince Patrick Island. Helicopter will also be used for transportation. Equipment used include a tape recorder, video camera, conventional camera and GPS.
