Objectif(s): To collect systematic geoscience information within this remote region aimed at producing new maps of the bedrock and surficial geology.

Description du projet: The initial field trip and reconnaissance in 2014 has the objective of introducing the team members to the geology of the area and making preliminary observations and collecting rock and soil samples. This work will be followed in 2015 and 2016 by 6-8 week field seasons collecting systematic geoscience information within this remote region aimed at producing new maps of the bedrock and surficial geology. The observations and new information will be published and available free of charge through the Natural Resources Canada website. For the 2014 field trip a team of 5 geologists will be based at remote (fly-in) lodges and will travel by helicopter to about 10-15 localities of geological interest per day within parts of National Topographic System sheets 74N, 74O, 74P, 75A, 75B, 75C, 75F and 75G, for the purpose of making observations and collecting rock and soil samples. Initial 2014 field trip visit will be brief and focused to allow for better project development in following years. Future project years will include community consultation and engagement and opportunities for geoscience educational visits to communities. From an economic perspective, southeastern NWT region has insufficient geoscience information to allow land-use decisions by industry, government or communities. In addition to better baseline information, the work will provide an indication of the mineral potential of the region. The observations and new information will be published and available free of charge through the Natural Resources Canada website http://geoscan.nrcan.gc.ca/geoscan-index.html, as maps and reports of the Geological Survey of Canada, as well as through Saskatchewan and NWT portals. The results will be presented at the NWT Geoscience Forum and discussed with communities at site visits in the following years The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from June 27, 2014 to July 5, 2014.
