Objective(s): To conduct geo-mapping for The Energy and Minerals Program, designed to upgrade the geoscience knowledge base in Canada’s North to modern standards.

Project Description: This work is part of NRCan’s Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals Program, designed to upgrade the geoscience knowledge base in Canada’s North to modern standards. A team of 10-15 scientists set up a temporary camp in the area of interest. Float planes, helicopter and boats are used to access remote areas. The research team will walk on the land and make observations, take notes and draw sketches. Small rock and soil (up to 10 kg) are collected using hammers and shovels and sent for analysis in laboratories. The observations are compiled and the results of analysis are used to prepare new geological maps for the area of interest. Samples will be archived at the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa. The data, maps and reports will be used in the longer term for land-use decision-making Results will be published as reports, maps and papers and will be available free for download from the Geological Survey of Canada and the Northwest Territories Geoscience Office websites. Presentations to scientific conferences (e.g. Yellowknife Geoscience Forum). Presentations and copies of reports can be made for the community upon request. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from June 24, 2016 to July 29, 2016.
