Project Description: The objective of the present project is to revisit areas last mapped in the 1950s and 1960s, to evaluate the state of existing knowledge and compare it with modern geological concepts and collect rock samples for analysis. This is the field component of a larger effort to update the geoscience knowledge base. New material will be collected by geologists during day trips in targeted areas. Small rock and soil samples (up to 10 kg) will be collected using hammers and shovels and examined for their rock type and in some instances geologic age. The geological information gained from this study will be helpful for land-use decision making by governments and communities. It will allow a better understanding of the rock types and mineral potential of the studied area that could be used in the process of formulating land withdrawals or deciding how the areas are used. The research results will be communicated to the individual participants through discussions and collaborative research. The community of Lutselk'e will be informed of research results through a public presentation in early 2013. Reports and maps will be forwarded to regional and Nunavut organizations. The research will result in published maps and reports of the Geological Survey of Canada, freely available via the internet. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 26, 2012 to August 12, 2012.
