Description du projet: This study will measure student motivation to read before and after implementation of the SmartReading approach, equip teachers with resources to use the reading strategies, and share successes to shape instruction. This project involves the use of SmartReading (a classroom approach designed to improve reading comprehension skills). Data will be collected from teachers in the form of surveys and reflection logs. Data will be collected from students in the form of surveys, interviews, and classroom observations. Twelve students will be selected to participate in an interview regarding their habits and attitudes to reading. Six students with high scores, and 6 students with low scores will be chosen from grades 7 and grade 10. From February to June teachers will implement reading strategies. In June, teachers will complete a survey to measure changes in their concerns and growth in their implementation of teaching tools. Teachers will administer the student survey and interview the participants. Approximately 105 students and 8 staff will be surveyed, and the number of students interviewed will be 12. A summary of results will be communicated to administrators and staff at the SSDEC. Parents will be provided with an overview of the project, and letters of consent for students. An end-of-year celebration will be held where parents may hear about the results. Survey information can be shared with their parents, if the students choose. Fieldwork will be conducted from March 27 to June 30, 2008, within the Paul W. Kaeser Secondary School in Fort Smith.
