Description du projet: The objective of this project is to collect biological and hydrological information on Hill Creek. It is unknown as to whether or not the culvert at the Hill Creek highway crossing is large enough to allow for the spring migration of spawning fish. The researchers will collect fisheries and habitat information on Hill Creek. This data will include fish presence/absence, lifestage and species composition. Field staff will travel by vehicle to the stream crossing located on Highway 3. Habitat mapping will take place on foot, and all sites or sensitive areas will be geo-referenced with a GPS. A spawning survey will also be conducted on foot, with researchers looking for signs of spawning activity. Northern pike will be the target species, but information on all species present will be collected. In July and August the site will be revisited for further investigation. During these visits researchers will use seine nets, dip nets, and an electroshocker. Fish will be collected and researchers will record length, weight, and species. All fish will be returned to the stream unharmed. The researchers will provide a report to the Aurora Research Institute summarizing the results. The study will be conducted at Hill Creek, east of Rae-Edzo on Highway 3, from June 23 to September 15, 2005.
