Objectif(s): This is the second year of an increasingly collaborative effort with the community of Holman. The project is an examination of long-term Copper Inuit - European intersocietal interaction during the 19th and 20th centuries through sociocultural and archaeological methods. The research will explore the interaction between the Copper Inuit and the Royal Navy expeditions and the fur trade on Victoria Island during the 19th century, and the processes of cultural change as a result of the impact of that interaction. Full investigation through oral interviews with Holman elders is of central importance to this project. Oral data will be collected using professional and ethical methods supported by the community and by the University of Manitoba Research Ethics Board. The archaeological component is being reviewed (and permitted) by the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.
