Objective(s): To identify reasons, moments, experiences, and conditions that have led NWT community school teaching principals to stay in their positions in small, remote NWT communities.

Project Description: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No.5022. The purpose of the study is to identify reasons, moments, experiences, and conditions that have led NWT community school teaching principals to stay in their positions in small, remote NWT communities. The proposed study will engage a group of small school, rural and remote teaching principals in the NWT who have remained in their position and school for a minimum of three years. The research study will employ qualitative research from an interpretive lens. The research team will be conducting semi structured interviews via distance with volunteer small school rural and remote teaching principals to better understand the reasons that they choose to stay in their roles. Interviews will be conducted outside of school hours. Participants will also have the opportunity to share short personal open-ended reflections. The Principal Investigator will notify the department of Education, Culture and Employment, the Northwest Territories Teachers' Association and Superintendents of the 10 NWT school boards about the study and its intent. Each participant will be required to give informed consent prior to participating. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from May 9, 2023 to December 31, 2023.
