Objective(s): To identify what challenges and opportunities COVID-19 brought out and outline strategies to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on the muskox and caribou monitoring program.
Project Description: This licence has been issued for the scientific research application No.5106. With this evaluation research project, the research team aims to identify what challenges and opportunities COVID-19 brought out and outline strategies to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 on the muskox and caribou monitoring program. The three partner groups will be interviewed: Indigenous partners, academics of the Kutz research group, and government biologists and wildlife officers. Interviews will be conducted by phone and will take approximately 30-45 minutes, and will be anonymized to protect participant privacy. Interviews will be recorded and transcribed before being analyzed and synthesized. The interviews will be semi-structured to allow an exploratory approach and the identification of emerging themes related to three main questions: 1) How did the COVID-19 pandemic impact the monitoring program and the work of each of the involved actors? 2) What strategies were used to mitigate the challenges that arose? and 3) What else could be done to mitigate challenges? The research team will make contact with potential interviewees by sending them an email inviting them to participate. The research team will then make meeting plans via email and meet via telephone for the interview on a day and time of their choosing. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from March 24, 2022 to September 30, 2022.
