Objective(s): To determine the environmental and physical conditions of nine sites in the Gordon Lake region.
Project Description: The primary objective of this research program is to determine the environmental and physical conditions of nine sites in the Gordon Lake region. This research will include the identification and quantification of environmental impacts in soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater. Samples of biota (e.g. Hyalella) may be collected at certain sites during the field program. The potential for Acid Rock Drainage will be further investigated and potential borrow sources may be further assessed. Additional detailed surveying may also be conducted at certain sites. Upon completion of this program, Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) will be provided reports detailing the nine sites located at Gordon Lakes. Engagement of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation (YKDFN) to date has included an initial desktop study, a tour of the sites for the YKDFN elders to review the site locations and gather information about historic and current uses of the sites, participation in a Traditional Knowledge study, participation in an archaeology assessment, and participation in a Remedial Action Plan work out. A consultation program that also highlights the benefits of the remediation plan will bring to the community is a requirement of the project. Additionally, a training program will be associated with the project to encourage engagement and jobs for the remediation program. PWGSC and INAC have engaged the local communities and communicated the results of the previous assessment programs and have worked through the remedial options analysis to finalize the remedial action plan. PWGSC and INAC will continue to engage the local communities and communicate the results of the additional assessment program. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 26, 2016 to November 30, 2016.
