Objective(s): To remediate the abandoned well site by removing, containing and stabilizing contaminated materials in an on-site landfill, and remove debris and solid waste from the site.
Project Description: The objective of the project is to remediate the abandoned well site by removing, containing and stabilizing contaminated materials in an on-site landfill, and remove debris and solid waste from the site. Large amounts of debris, drums and evidence of contaminants was found in soil, groundwater and surface water at the site during investigations in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013. The proposed 2015 Site activities will include several investigations: Geotechnical, Geophysical and Thermal Investigation – Small sample pits will be excavated by hand or with a handheld drill for geotechnical sampling, and geophysical (Time Domain Electromagnetic) survey. Thermistors will be installed in the waste potential disposal and borrow areas. All the sample pits will be backfilled afterwards. Waste Investigation – Small sample pits will be excavated by hand or with a handheld drill to collect soil samples from the areas where waste was previously suspected to be buried. All sample pits will then be backfilled. For this investigation, a full vertical and lateral delineation of the buried waste is required to determine the volumes. Additional soil and water sampling will be conducted to further refine the lateral and vertical distribution of contaminated soil and water. Drum Sampling and Wastewater Volume Estimation – An inventory and sampling of fluids in drums in the well site area and in the airstrip building will be conducted. Estimated volumes of liquids requiring subsequent treatment and disposal will be recorded. Abandoned Shothole Decommissioning – Any exposed wires will be tested by a galvanometer, and existing, abandoned shotholes will be filled and marked. Assessment of Water Supply – Samples will be collected from potential potable water supply locations (rivers, lakes). The water samples will then be analysed for potable water quality and bacterial parameters. This will help in determining the requirements for water treatment. Topographic Survey – A high resolution topographic survey will be conducted at the well site and potential disposal and borrow areas. It will capture the layout of ground control points for UAV survey. The survey will also be used to determine the installation of permanent bench marks for future works. A survey of test pit and sample locations from waste investigation and geotechnical investigations will also be performed. UAV Survey Field Program – A low altitude UAV survey of airstrip, apron, camp, wellsite, access roads, potential disposal and borrow areas, major watercourses, nearshore area, and ground control points will be performed. The duration of summer 2015 activities will be from two to three weeks. A temporary camp will be set up at Satellite Bay for the duration of that time. The camp will be set up using A-frame canvas tents with diesel-fuelled heating stoves. One large tent will house a kitchen (including kitchen appliances) and workspace and four additional tents will be set up as bedrooms for the ten rotational field staff. Tents or shacks will be used for bathrooms. The camp will be disassembled and removed from the site during demobilization. As in previous project-related research at the site, Talisman will submit a follow-up report to the Hunters and Trappers Committees and Community Corporations of Sachs Harbour and Ulukhaktok, the EISC, and the ARI. This will include a plain language summary of investigation findings. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from July 3, 2015 to August 31, 2015.
