Objective(s): To determine site remediation options for future remediation work; and to complete contaminant delineation and other assessment work at the site.
Project Description: The objective of this study is to conduct further assessments to determine site remediation options for future remediation work. Talisman conducted a Site Reconnaissance and Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) in the summer of 2008 and a Phase II ESA in the summer of 2010 to determine environmental impacts to the area. A detailed report was prepared and submitted to the communities and the Environmental Impact Screening Committee (EISC). Talisman will carry out an assessment program at the site. Work will comprise a detailed soil and water sampling program, geophysical survey, airstrip assessment, bathymetry studies, and further debris consolidation. Project work will be carried out in late August, possibly including the beginning of September, 2011 (7 days of field work). The site will be accessed by fixed-wing aircraft and the work will include detailed site description and remediation feasibility and risk assessment work. A team of 10 will stay at a temporary camp at Satellite Bay to carry out the work. An intrusive soil and water sampling program will identify, delineate and quantify the contaminants present at the site. Soil sampling will involve the use of hand-held augers and shovels (no powered equipment). Samples will be submitted for laboratory analysis of contaminants and geotechnical characteristics. The debris consolidation work will be done manually and involves collecting and piling like debris types in concentrated areas that are void of vegetation. All debris will be described and quantified. On-site movement of equipment, materials, samples etc., as well as patrols by Wildlife / Environmental Monitors will be done on two ATVs with trailers. Four A-frame canvas tents will comprise the camp; tent heating stoves will and appliances will be propane operated; an incinerator toilet will be used and the ashes transported from the site and disposed of at an appropriate facility. Only biodegradable cleaning and hygiene products will be used; grey water will be disposed of in a temporary sump, located at least 100 m from any water bodies, that will be backfilled at the end of the project work with clean original soil materials. Soil and water samples will be removed from the site. No site debris is anticipated to be removed this year. As in 2010, a follow-up report will be submitted to the Hunters and Trappers Committees and Community Corporations of Sachs Harbour and Ulukhaktok, the EISC, and the Aurora Research Institute. This will include a plain-language summary of investigation findings. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from August 21, 2011 to September 2, 2011.
