Objective(s): To determine the current roles and functions of social work supervisors with a view to better determining education and training needs.
Project Description: The research in the NWT is part of a larger western Canadian project that aims to determine the current roles and functions of social work supervisors with a view to better determining education and training needs. There is limited research on social work supervision in Canada and information that informs education and training needs is very limited. This research intends to create a profile of social work supervision activities in different regions and in different areas of service delivery with a view to understanding the current state of social work supervision. Advertisement and snowball sampling will be used for recruitment. Supervisors will be asked to complete a survey questionnaire and they will be asked to select a typical week of work and complete an activity log. In the activity log different types of work tasks are coded and the supervisor will take a few minutes each day to enter the activity codes. The survey and log are available electronically. In addition, if a sufficient number of supervisors are interested we plan to conduct individual interviews and run a focus group in Yellowknife. The data, quantitative and qualitative will be analyzed and used to prepare a report, training material, and journal articles. A report will be distributed to the professional association as well as any government or non-profit organizations that may be interested in the work. The fieldwork for this study will be conducted from May 29, 2014 to December 15, 2014.
